Originally from Prince Rupert, B.C., Janis Woode began her artistic journey by enrolling in basic clay hand-building courses at community centers. She later received formal training at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design and is a graduate of the Clay and Textile program at Capilano College.
Primarily known for her figurative sculpture, Woode has recently begun exploring non-figurative work. She explains, “With these non-figurative pieces, the challenge is to breathe life or movement into the inanimate. I am inspired by the human condition and personal experience.”
Old truck hoods, typewriters, and kitchen utensils, all rich with metaphor, inspire new narratives in her work. These objects can sit in her studio for years, waiting for their stories to be retold. Woode’s deep love for metal, in any form, drives her to seek materials from scrapyards, secondhand stores, and metal recycling bins.
An award-winning sculptor, Woode’s work is held in private collections both nationally and internationally.
